While open offices have valid reasons for redesigning the workspace, such as reducing the real estate footprint and facilitating collaboration, many introverts wonder what kind of sadist concocted the layout, gleefully corralling his employees into a single room so he could torture them with the three same mixtapes he made for that rodeo once in high school. When I first walked into my current work environment, I was warily excited this was a completely new atmosphere for me after all, and I thought it would be a good to experience the new, trendy “big cool tech company” vibe being pitched to me. However, a year later I’ve come to realize the physiological impacts of our office surroundings that many of my coworkers don’t quite understand, and so I rolled up my sleeves and sought to solve these problems on my own. Since there was no way I could drop in on a weekend with a haul from Home Depot and build myself a tidy little enclosure, I managed to work out a few ways to not only cope, but even enjoy my work in this new, wild environment. 1. Devise a way to show that you’re busy. You don’t need a giant stoplight hanging off the side of your desk to let your employees know that you’re unavailable for socializing. Simple things like wearing headphones (if your office allows them), or even a small sign resting at the top of your computer monitor reading “Busy Right Now.” The headphones are typically the better option, since they also serve as a way to block out the inevitable noise of a crowd of people fenced into a concrete cage together. Research suggests that background noise distracts introverts many times more than extroverts, and reducing that noise is essential to productivity. 2. Take time to recharge alone. Perhaps the most obvious, but easily overlooked tip. Short breaks throughout the day can help you handle the snowballing effect of stress that can come with the pressure to socialize with coworkers. I made it a habit to take two short walks outside the office twice a day to get away from the noise, but perhaps even taking a few minutes to lie down in your car or read a book a few times a week can relieve that pressure. 3. Note the quiet times in the office. An open office means being available to your colleagues at nearly all times of the day. After a couple of weeks however, you’ll likely notice a pattern of activity that you can take advantage of. Note these times to schedule your more difficult tasks to take advantage of the extra breathing room. 4. Find a way to make your desk more private. There is little to no privacy in an open office. A 2013 study reported that many workers within open offices were frustrated by distractions and the poor performance that resulted. Nearly half of those surveyed noted the lack of sound privacy was a serious problem, and more than 30% objected to the lack of visual privacy. Consider asking to have your desk moved to a wall, or perhaps insulate your space with plants or other barriers. 5. Book a conference room to work alone. If there are meeting rooms not being used, why not book one for a ‘meeting with yourself’ to take advantage of the quiet space it provides. If you have a particularly intensive task at hand, or when the open space environment becomes too much to handle, this option can be a valuable fix. Even relocating to the smaller rooms for more semi-private collaboration with a colleague can be much less taxing, and allow you to communicate in a way that is more conducive to your style and get work done without unpleasant interruptions. 6. Get support from your boss. Yeah, I know, trying to explain to your boss that you need quiet and calm to do your best work feels like you’re admitting that you’re not meeting expectations. More often than not however, your boss is on your side. If you have to, present your boss with the facts. In one study of 42,000 workers in 303 office buildings, all types of employees noted that enclosed private offices are superior to open-plan layouts “particularly in acoustics, privacy, and proxemics issues.” Bottom line: you don’t have to be aggressive or stage any sort of protest to overcome the stress that comes with the open-office. You can carve out your own pockets of time or space to breath and perhaps even enjoy your work again. Check out her review of her school: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Sharanya: The University of California, San Diego is located in the affluent coastal city of La Jolla, California. The campus is generally very safe, and the option for a student to call a Community Service Officer to walk him or her back to his/her dorm or apartment on campus is just one phone call away come evening. Students have access to the bus routes that service the campus, most parts of La Jolla, and other parts of San Diego. A car can serve as a convenience for those who wish to access the parts of San Diego that are unreachable by bus. Moreover, many students bike to get from class to class, especially when going from one end of campus to the other. VT: How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Sharanya: Professors and teaching assistants hold office hours, where students can go and ask any questions about course material that they have. Academic advisers both for students majors and colleges are available for students to talk to in order to develop a four-year academic course plan that ensure a timely graduation date. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Sharanya: The University of California, San Diego has six different undergraduate colleges (Revelle, Muir, Marshall, Roosevelt, Warren, and Sixth) that determine not only the general education courses students take, but also their on-campus housing location. I myself am a Marshall studentduring my freshman year, I lived in the residence halls, which are structured as a suite-style living space (each houses anywhere from nine to 14 people); during my sophomore year, I lived in one of the on-campus apartments (each houses anywhere from four to six people). There are multiple resident assistants (RAs) for each section of campus housing; each one takes on a residence hall building or an apartment cluster. The RAs are there to make each students on-campus college experience as fun and welcoming as possible. There are six dining halls on campus (one in each of the six colleges), as well as four specialty eateries where students can use their dining dollars to eat. Additionally, the RAs wil l put on many socializing/team-building events for their residents to come out and get to know each other. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Sharanya: The University of California, San Diego is a public university that emphasizes the importance of researchthe university is best known for its Division of Biological Sciences (as well as their medical school), its Rady School of Management, and its Jacobs School of Engineering. I am currently pursuing a degree in biochemistry and cell biology because I want to work in either a pharmaceutical company or a public health organization in the future. The University of California, San Diego is one of the best ranked schools for Biological Sciences in the United States, and it provides many opportunities for research in this particular branch of science. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Sharanya: During my time so far at the University of California, San Diego, I find that most of the friends that I have made are either from on-campus housing arrangements or my classes. Joining a club/student organization or a Greek organization can make it easier for students to develop a close-knit group of friends. I myself am not in a Greek organization, but my friends that are find that the sisterhood/brotherhood that comes with being in a sorority/fraternity is very fulfilling, socially and emotionally. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Sharanya: The Career Services Center on campus is a great resource for students who need help obtaining jobs/internships relevant to their majors. Every so often, the center will hold informational sessions and other workshops to provide students with more information about searching for jobs, building a good resume, and acing job interviews. Some companies even come to the University of California, San Diego every so often, and the center holds career fairs on campus for students to hand in their resumes to companies, as well. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Sharanya: In addition to the main library located in the center of the campus, there is a Biomedical Sciences Library located at the medical school. There are also many study areas and lounges located throughout the campus, as well. Although they are quickly filled up during finals week, finding a quiet space to study throughout the quarter is not that difficult. VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Sharanya: The University of California, San Diego, despite the institutions name, is located in La Jolla, an affluent coastal city north of downtown San Diego. There are a few beaches that are about a 20-minute walk from the western edge of campus; many students go there to surf, swim, and hang out in their spare time, weather permitting. La Jolla has a shopping center called La Jolla Village Square, as well as a Westfield Shopping Mall that are both easy to access by bus. Most students frequent either or both of these places to get whatever shopping they have done. La Jolla also has a downtown area with many restaurants and small boutiques, as well as a cove where people can observe the many seals that live there. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Sharanya: The University of California, San Diego has an undergraduate student population of approximately 24,000 students. Because it is a public university, lecture class sizes can range anywhere from 100-400 students, but most courses have a smaller, classroom-style learning component in addition to the lecture. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed with lecture classes, as they can make it more difficult for some students to ask questions. However, professors have office hours where students can come in and ask whatever questions they have in a one-on-one setting. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Sharanya: At a large university like the University of California, San Diego, it can be hard for the professor to know each and every student (and vice versa). One unique thing that my school offers to its students is the opportunity to Dine with a Prof, where students are able to enjoy a free meal with a professor they would like to get to know better outside of the lecture hall. Two of my classmates and I took advantage of this opportunity and did Dine with a Prof with one of our humanities professors, and we were able to have a good conversation with him over some delicious food. Lateral Area Lateral Area In geometry, a 3-dimensional figure is the object which has 3 dimensional measurements of length, width and height. Using these 3 measurements, various calculations of volume, surface areas are analyzed. Shapes such as polyhedrons, cylinders, cones and spheres are 3-dimensional figures. Polyhedrons are the shapes which have flat surfaces known as faces, and these faces are made of polygons. Examples of polyhedrons are pyramids and prisms. Cylinders, cones, spheres are 3-dimensional but are not polyhedrons as they do not have flat surfaces. They have curved surfaces. Cylinders have 2 congruent base circles connected by a curved surface. A cone is a figure which has a base circle connected to the vertex on top by a curved surface. A sphere is also one such space figure which has all its points equidistant from the center point. What is Lateral Area? Lateral Area is the sum area of all the surfaces of the figure except the base and the top area. That means, lateral area is the sum of area of all the faces or lateral surfaces only. Based on the shape of the figure, the lateral area can be calculated accordingly. Lateral area is measured in square units. For instance, if the dimensions are in meters, then the unit of lateral area would be square meters. Lateral Area of Geometric Shapes: Lateral area of various geometric shapes can be calculated using the dimensions of that particular shape. For calculating the lateral area, we do not add the areas of the top surface and the bottom surface of the figure. While calculating the Total Surface Area of a figure, we add up the areas of all the surfaces (including the top and the bottom), but for Lateral Area only the areas of the lateral faces need to be added up. Now let us calculate the Lateral Area of various geometric shapes with different sizes: 1) Lateral Area of a Prism: A prism is a very popular 3-dimensional figure which consists of flat faces and identical bases. The bases are congruent and parallel to each other. All along the length, the prisms have the same cross-section. The prism is a polyhedron, so it does not have any curved sides. Its faces are flat and it has edges (or sides) as straight lines. We can classify different types of prisms based on the cross-section or the base of the prism. If the base or the cross-section of a prism is a square, then it is known as a Square Prism. If the cross-section along the length is a triangle, then it is known as a Triangular Prism. Lateral area of any prism can be calculated by using the formula as shown below: Lateral Area of a Prism = (Perimeter of the Base) * (Height of the prism) == L = P * h a) Lateral Area of a Rectangular Prism: A rectangular prism has 6 rectangular faces including the top and the bottom surface. Since the base of the cross-section of the prism is a rectangle, hence it is known as the Rectangular Prism. To calculate the Lateral area of a rectangular prism, we consider only the area of the 4 lateral faces and do not calculate the area of the 2 bases of the prism. The perimeter of the base of a rectangular prism is nothing but the perimeter of the base rectangle. The perimeter of a rectangle is the sum of all its side lengths. This implies Perimeter of a rectangle, P = 2l +2w (where l = length and w = width of the rectangle). Hence the Lateral Area of a Rectangular prism can now also be written as: Lateral Area of a Rectangular Prism = Perimeter of the Base * Height of the Prism L = P * h L = (2l + 2w) * h Or L = 2lh + 2wh (where l = length, w = width, h = height) Example: Calculate the lateral area of a rectangular prism if given that the length is 6m, width is 5m, and height is 8m. Given that length l = 6m, width w = 5m and height, h = 8m. Lateral area of the rectangular prism, L = Perimeter of the base * Height L = 2lh + 2wh == L = (2* 6* 8) + (2* 5 * 8) == L = 96 + 80 = 176m Hence, the Lateral Area, L = 176 square meters. b) Lateral area of a Triangular Prism:A triangular prism is a prism whose base of the prism (or the cross-section along the length) is a triangle. If the sides of the base triangle are a, b and c, then the Perimeter of a triangle is the sum of all its sides = (a + b + c). Lateral Area of a Triangular Prism = (Perimeter of the base triangle) * (Height of the Prism) L = (a + b + c) * h Example: What is the lateral area of a triangular prism whose height is 12cm and which has a base triangle of side length 6cm, 4cm and 5cm? Given height of the prism, h = 12cm The side lengths of the base triangle are a = 6cm, b =4cm and c = 5cm. Lateral Area of a Triangular Prism = (Perimeter of the base triangle) * (Height of the Prism) L = (a + b + c) * h Hence, L = (6cm + 4cm + 5cm) * 12cm == L = 180 square centimeters. c) Lateral area of a Regular Hexagonal Prism:A hexagonal prism is a prism whose base of the prism (or the cross-section along the length) is a hexagon. A hexagon is a polygon with 6 sides. A hexagonal prism consists of 2 identical hexagonal bases and 4 rectangular faces. A regular hexagon is a polygon which has 6 equal sides. If the side length of the base regular hexagon is s, then the perimeter of the base hexagon is the sum of all its sides = s + s + s + s + s + s = 6s. Lateral area of a Hexagonal Prism, L = (Perimeter of the base regular hexagon) * (Height of the Prism) L = (6* s) * h Example: If the height of the prism is 10cm and the base is regular hexagon of side length 4cm, then what is the perimeter of this hexagonal prism? Given height of the prism, h = 10cm The side length of the base regular hexagon, s = 4cm Lateral area of a Hexagonal Prism, L = (Perimeter of the base hexagon) * (Height of the Prism) L = (6* s) * h Hence, L = (6* 4cm) * 10cm == L = 240 square centimeters. 2) Lateral area of a Pyramid: A pyramid is a 3-dimensional figure whose base is a polygon and has triangular faces meeting at the top vertex (also known as the apex). Lateral area of a pyramid is the sum of the areas of the lateral faces of the pyramid structure, without including the area of the base. Just like a prism, there are different types of pyramids based on the shape of its base. If the base of the pyramid is a triangle, then it is known as a Triangular Pyramid. If the base of the pyramid is a rectangle, then it is known as the Rectangular Pyramid. If the base polygon is a regular polygon, then we get a regular pyramid. If the base polygon is an irregular polygon, then the pyramid formed is an irregular pyramid. Lateral Area of a Regular Pyramid = 1/2 * (Perimeter of the base) * (Slant height of the pyramid) (Note: Slant height is the perpendicular altitude drawn from the apex (vertex) to the base of the lateral triangle as shown in the above figure). Lateral Area of an Irregular Pyramid = Sum of the areas of each lateral triangular faces a) Lateral Area of a Square Pyramid: A square pyramid is a pyramid which has a square base. If the side length of the square base is a, then the perimeter of the square base = 4 * a Let the slant height which is the perpendicular distance drawn from the apex to the base of the lateral triangle be = s Lateral Area of a Square Pyramid = 1/2 * (Perimeter of the Square base) * (Slant height of the pyramid) = 1/2 * 4a * s = 2 * a * s Therefore, Lateral Area of the Square Pyramid = 2 * a * s Example: Find the lateral area of a square pyramid whose square base has a side length of 5m and its slant height is 9m. Given side length of the square base of the pyramid, a = 5m Slant height of the pyramid, s = 9m Lateral area of the Square Pyramid = 2* a* s = 2* 5m * 9m = 90m2 b) Lateral Area of a Triangular Pyramid: A pyramid consisting of a triangular base is known as the Triangular Pyramid. In general cases, the base triangle is an equilateral triangle and therefore it is an equilateral triangular pyramid, also known as the regular triangular pyramid. But in case the base triangle does not have equal sides, then the pyramid is known as the irregular pyramid. If the side lengths of the base triangle are a, b, and c, then the perimeter of the triangle = (a+ b+ c) Let the slant height of the pyramid = s Then, Lateral Area of the Triangular pyramid = 1/2 * (a+ b+ c) * s Example: Calculate the lateral area of an equilateral triangular pyramid of base side of 6m and slant height of 10m. A cylinder is a 3-dimensional solid closed figure and it consists of 2 congruent circular bases that are connected by a curved surface. A cylinder has 2 congruent circular bases and they are parallel to each other. The perpendicular length between the 2 circular bases is known as the height of the cylinder or the altitude. For a given cylinder, let the radius of the circular base = r Let the height (or altitude) which is the perpendicular distance between the 2 circular bases = h Then the lateral area of the cylinder is given by the equation below: Lateral Area of a Cylinder = (Circumference of the circular base) * (Height of the cylinder) Therefore, Lateral Area of a Cylinder = 2 * ???? * r * h Example: Calculate the lateral area of a cylinder whose radius of the circular base is 6m and the height of the cylinder is 8m. The slant height is the distance along the surface of the cone from the vertex to the circle, as shown in the figure on the right.
